‘El Camino’, House of Electonic Arts, Basel
31 August – 11 November 2012
Sensing Place: Mediatizing the Urban Landscape,
House of the Electronic Arts Basel
Exhibition Opening: Thursday, August 30, 2012, 7 pm
The large scale black and white print El Camino will be exhibited for the first time in combination with the sound work Satellite Sounding.
Part of the Taking Soundings series, El Camino traces a journey along and around the historic Camino Real which linked the founding of cities along the Californian coast. The GPS ‘map’ image is both full of information and oddly empty of context, a highly personalised memory and an anonymous trace viewed as a pattern. The voices in Satellite Sounding respond to electronically sonified GPS data of their walks with the Satellite Sounder instruments, expressing confusion, wonder and questioning about the process of navigating, relating ones direct experience and memory with the technological process.
Curated by Sabine Himmelsbach.
